Gubbio area In the center of Umbria, the green heart of Italy, visitors can find important and beautiful towns and locations, such as Perugia, Assisi and the pitoresque Trasimeno lake, which goes west until the Tuscan border. Perugia is the main important city in Umbria and Assisi, only 10 kms far from Perugia, is famous all over the world because of Saint Francis and the magnificent Cathedrals.
Montefalco, Spello and Spoleto area Thirty minutes south of Perugia and Assisi there is a territory which is considered the geographical center of the Umbrian region. It is a great land full of olive trees and vineyards where an excellent red wine is produced: the famous Sagrantino wine. The most important towns to visit are Spello (with its amazing historic downtown), Montefalco, Foligno and Spoleto. Most buildings and churches here are all made with the typical white umbrian stone. COUNTRY HOUSES The south part of Umbria offers unique landscapes and locations to visitors: the wonderful Orvieto, high on its tufa rock, with its Duomo cathedral and Saint Patrick's Well, Todi, with its cute downtown and countryside, and Amelia, where the Romans left a strong evidence of their ancient settlement. This part of Umbria is also a great starting point for day tours, since it is very well connected by train and highway to the main central Italy cities of Rome and Florence.
