ITALY TRAVEL TIPS

Useful information about Your travel in Italy.

  • When to go: Italy's climate is one of the most hospitable in the world, summers are dry, winters mild, springs and autumn colourful seasons. So Italy can be visited from April to October. In August and July the beaches locations are crowded but if you are interested in visiting some cities in this period it could be an opportunity to escape the traffic and the crowds of the cities.
  • Temperatures: Central Italy in general has an average temperature starting from a minimum of 14-15 C° in April up to 25-26 C° in summer (August and July). Of course these averages are not valid for particular areas (seaside or mountains) where the values can be different.
  • Money: Italy, as many european countries, from 2002 has Euro currency. Euro is issued in pieces of 5,10,20,50,100,200 and 500 euros and coins of 1,2,5,10,20,50 cents and 1,2 euros. Too see the currency covnerter with a different money click here.
  • Banks and payments: you can easily pay with international Credit card in Italy, but in some small towns or countryside areas these credit card payments could not to be accepted. For this reason once you are in Italy, we suggest to go to a money change office or in a bank (Bank hours: 8,30 am to 1,30 pm and usually 2,30 pm to 3,00 / 3,30 pm open from monday to friday)
  • Post offices have similar work-hours, they are open from 8,00 am to 2,00 pm. At the post office you can buy stamps (you can do it also in a tobaccos stores) and send packages. For other expeditions or money transfer there are some specific points (western union, mailboxes offices...)
  • Health: no vaccinations are required. The place to buy medicines is the Farmacie (chemist's) signed with a green luminous cross in general. But if you are seriously ill maybe you can call a local doctor or medical guard or go directly to the public hospital (in case of emergency these are the numbers to dial: ambulance/medical: 118, police-general emergency: 112, fire, disasters: 115.
  • Documents: if you are an European citizens from a country belonging to EC, an identity card is sufficient, while for all the others citizens a valid passport is required.Driving licenses and other traffic documents valid in other countries are recognized in Italy. Distances are indicated in kilometer ( 1 km = 0.621 miles). An international insurance certificate is required for citizens from non-EC countries. The wearing of seat belts in front and rear seats is obligatory, speed limits are indicated wit circle red and white signals. In the Highway (signed by big green signpost) like A1, A2 etc... the speed limit is 130 km/h when it's dry weather, when it is rainy or foggy weather limit is lower (110 km/h and even 60 km/h if there is too fog).   • Tourist information: once you are in Italy it is suggested to search for a tourist info point (in general indicated by a "i" in a yellow or brown signposts). These offices are a useful place to get local maps or tourist brochures and morevoer to have info about Car rental.
  • Electricity: the voltage used in Italy is 220 volts. Many accommodations, especially those placed in the biggest city, provides in their rooms Satellite TV and phone line. There are public phones too and a large part of the territory is served by the GSM so if you have a mobile phone is not is not difficult to make a call. Some internet point are presents above all in the city downtown and near the train station.

  • Accommodations types: Italy offers different types of lodgings: Hotels (classified by international range with stars), b&b (bed and breakfast, they usually provide a nightly stay and breakfast service), farm-holidays (farmhouses or agritourisms) a type of lodging ususally placed in a country posiition or just out of a town, a farm holiday generally provides rooms or apartments accommodation, they can offer meals, typical self-production foods, or simple breakfast. They often offer some facilities like swimming pool,horsemanship and mountain bikes rental. Some of them also provide sauna, fitness room and massages services. Other accommodations you can find in Italy are Holiday houses (private homes offering self-catering vacation), Historic inns (high quality and luxury services) and private Villas.
  • Restaurants and other places: Italy offers a large variety of restaurants, the cheapest place to eat are the Pizzerias (in this place you can enjoy one of the most italian food: pizza) and the international fast-food (above all in the biggest centre) while the most expensive are the gourmet-restaurants, generally placed in the downtown of the biggest cities. For the Espresso lovers (italian coffèè) there are many bar (coffee). For the italian wines lovers we suggest to ask for an Enoteca or Wine-bar.
  • Transportations: In central Italy the most important airport is Fiumicino-Leonardo da Vinci (near Rome), but there are also other airports in Florence, Pisa, Ciampino (Rome), Perugia. For land transportations you can use the public bus or the trains or the taxi-cab.

CENTRAL ITALY REGIONS

Central Italy represents the most common image of the whole country. Not only because of the Rome presence, but also because for several years this territory was ruled by the Pope. So this means that each region that belonged to the Church state is still marked by a lot of palaces, churches, and artistic treasures such as paintings, sculptures and monuments.

UMBRIA

Umbria is called the green heart of Italy. It is just in the middle of the country and it is a region characterized by small borughs, wild nature and historic attractions. it is a small region, with only 815.000 citizens. The biggest cities are Perugia and Terni. The most important and famous town are Assisi, Orvieto, Todi, Gubbio and Spoleto.

-Main monuments and museums: Duomo di Orvieto, Fontana Maggiore (Perugia), Palazzo dei Consoli (Gubbio) Basilica di San Francesco (Assisi), Rocca Albornoziana (Spoleto), Piazza del popolo (Todi). Umbrian paintings gallery (Perugia), San Benedetto church (Norcia), S.Rita Sanctuary (Cascia)

-Main nature attractions: Marmore falls (Terni), Clitunno's springs (Trevi-Foligno), Castelluccio di Norcia (Norcia), Trasimeno lake (near Perugia), Natural river park of Tevere (between Todi and Orvieto), The prehistoric wood of Dunarobba (near Terni), Monte Cucco park (near Gubbio), National park of Sibillini Mountains (near Cascia and Norcia).

-Foods: If you are in Umbria do not miss the typical restaurants (trattorie and osterie) where some delicious traditional meals are served. Umbrian dishes: Umbrichelli (light pasta with prepared with flour and water) with black truffle, Pork sausages and salami and mazzafegati (a special type of pork sausages with liver), Beans soup, Lentils, Game meat (wild boar, hare, deer, rabbit). Do not miss also the great wines (some representative labels, Cardeto Orvieto classico, Decugnano de Barbi, Castello della Sala and Cervaro Antinori, Palazzone, Lungarotti, Sagrantino di Montefalco, Monrubio...)

-Airports and main roads: the biggest airport is Sant'Egidio (15 km far from Perugia - http://www.airport.umbria.it/). TUSCANY

Tuscany (Toscana) is a world-famous region of Italy. It is considered the renaissance cradle. It is one of the most representative region of the whole country and it is well known for its beautiful cities like Florence, Siena, Pisa and other important towns. It is one of the biggest region of central Italy too, infact it has more than 3.500.000 citizens. However the real identity of Tuscany is revelead discovering its several interesting borughs like San Gimignano, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona, Saturnia, Arezzo,Pitigliano. All these towns are located in different areas of the region: maremma, chianti, valdichiana, val d'orcia, crete senesi.

Nevertheless do not forget to taste the sweet cake of Siena (panforte and ricciarelli) beside the great world-famous wine such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Morellino di Scansano, Montepulciano red-wine and many others.
 
-Airports and main roads: the A1 highway (leading you in Florence and Pisa) the inner main street Cassia and the Aurelia motorway (along the coast). Main airports: Galileo Galilei airport in Pisa and the Florence airport.

LATIUM

Latium (Lazio) is the region with Rome and it is strongly influenced by this presence. Rome is a unique city, with its 2.600.000 citizens is the biggest city of the region. It boasts a great artistic patrimony and superb monuments like Colosseum, Piazza di Spagna, Fontana di Trevi and the Vatican city (the Pope seat) with the marevellous San Pietro cathedral and vatican museums.
Other important cities: Latina, Viterbo, Rieti, Frosinone.

-Foods: in the north-area of the region there are several meals to be suggested, the roasted-pork or wonderful pasta with porcini mushrooms, cereal soups and typical cakes with nuts. In the area of Bolsena lake a coregone-fish is a must or the local Sbroscia (a typical fish-lake soup). About the wine, the most famous in this area is the Est Est Est of Montefiascone.
 
-Airports and main roads: the A1 highway (linking Rome to Naples, florence and Milano) the old roman roads (Appia antica, Salaria, Cassia, Flaminia and Aurelia). Main airports Rome-Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) and Ciampino.

MARCHES

Marches (Marche) is a region on the east side of central Italy, on the Adriatic sea coast. It is an untouched region with many spaces of wild nature and agricultural aspetcs. Ancona, the main city, is a dynamic place and harbour. Marches region is rich of isolated boroughs and parks.
Other important cities and towns: Macerata, Ascoli Piceno, Pesaro, Urbino, Fermo and Fano.
 
-Main monuments and museums: Piazza Italia and duomo di S.Emidio (Ascoli), duomo dell'Assunta (Fermo), Castello di Jesi (near Ancona), Castello di Gradara (Pesaro), the Cathedral of Urbino, The Loreto Sanctuary (near Ancona), San vittore delle chiuse abbey (Ancona district), Mole Vanvitelliana (Ancona), Archeological site of Helvia Recina (Macerata) and Falerone (Ascoli), Palazzo Ducale (Urbino), Arecheological site of La Fenice (Senigallia), Paper national museum (Fabriano), National gallery (Urbino)
 
-Main nature attractions: Frasassi's caves (Genga), National park of the Conero (Ancona), The Sibillini mountain national park
 
-Foods: the cookery tradition of this region is very different if you are in the coast side or in the inner part. On the coast you have to try the famous Brodetto marchigiano (a fish-soup) while in the inner part you can enjoy delicious pork-meats, mushrooms and truffle. You can choose between many types of wine, the most famous is the Jesi white-wine called Verdicchio.
 
Airports and main roads: the main road is the A14 highway that links Ancona with Bologna and Taranto. Other important road: the SS 16 Adriatica motorway.
