Day excursion by bus to Bolsena, departing from Orvieto scalo, Piazza della Pace (behind the train station). Two locations between Umbria and Lazio, joined by history. The explosion of the volcano of Bolsena contributed to the formation of the tufa mass on which Orvieto sits. Bolsena became an important city thanks to the Etruscan population that was deported (following the conquest of Orvieto by the Romans in the 3rd century BC) from Orvieto to Bolsena.
The bond with Orvieto is not only attributable to this distant era, but in the Middle Ages it became even stronger with the prodigious event known as the Eucharistic Miracle during which a consecrated host spilled blood and stained the linen cloth placed on the altar. This cloth was transported to the nearby Umbrian town of Orvieto, where the Pope was then residing.
The village of Bolsena, and in particular its oldest part, offers interesting sights including the majestic Monaldeschi Castle which houses the local museum and the modern Aquarium of the lake, the beautiful church of Santa Cristina, and the archaeological area of Volsinii Novi with remains of the Etruscan period.
The excursion includes:
